This fund will supplement treatment and living expenses for Letha Rodman Melchior, diagnosed with stage IV melanoma in 2010. Artist and musician Letha Rodman Melchior has been battling cancer for nearly four years. As she wrote in 2011, October 2010 was marked by her ten-year anniversary with husband Dan Melchior, and then, “By the end of October I had lost 20 pounds and gained a Jersey Tomato sized lump in my inner right thigh. Bejesus!” By February 2011, the “tomato-sized lump” had led her to a diagnosis of Stage IV melanoma. Since then, Letha and Dan have moved to Durham, NC, in order for her to be treated at Duke University, and Letha has undergone a range of surgeries and experimental treatments, rejection of other experimental treatments, seen spots and tumors come and go on her lungs and intestines. Right now she is hospitalized with a bleeding lesion on her brain . While her condition has somewhat improved, Dan and Letha are financially struggling because she has been unable to work and he gave up full-time work in order to care for her at home. With no regular salary, Dan and Letha are counting on sales of their music and artwork to make ends meet, and have taken to selling art and records from their home to help supplement. As you can imagine, it is extremely tough to make it as a working artist, let alone when you’re not well enough to tour far beyond home. There is another fund for Dan and Letha’s living expenses, generously set up prior to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. However, insurance will still not cover all needed expenses, and donations have dwindled with time. Dan and Letha are very much in need of assistance until Letha’s treatment concludes, for which there is no foreseeable timeline. Since 2011, Letha has been blogging candidly about her symptoms, treatment, and experiences. You can follow her progress at http://lethashappyhospitalfuntime.blogspot.com/.
